Time to Give Up?

I’ve had it with our system of government. Political parties have ruined our ability as a people to govern through representation. And here’s one more proof that our “elected” officials (party-appointed plutocrats running in gerrymandered districts and voted into office using insecure systems) are more interested in campaign contributions than constituent concerns.

You know that email going around about everyone not buying gas for a day? It’s a hoax, because people need gas, and not buying it one day will just mean making up for the purchase the next day.

But we don’t need new CDs, DVDs, movie theatres, or cable TV. I think what we need is a visible, ongoing protest, where people promise to eliminate or drastically cut down on the purchases they make that fund RIAA and MPAA. Ways we can do this: - Only rent from independent video store chains who purchase their DVDs outright, rather than those like Blockbuster who have profit-sharing agreements with movie studios - Purchase pre-rented and used DVDs and CDs - Sell a few DVDs or CDs you don’t watch anymore on eBay, etc. Keep the existing inventory in circulation - Stop buying ring tones - Find a way to cut your cable subscription plan - Drop Blockbuster and Netflix, instead try Peerflix - Find local and independent bands to support - Flat out refuse to purchase DRM technology for which there is no available workaround (iTunes and BlueRay come to mind) - Be a producer, not a consumer. Try out for a band, film a movie, get involved in your church productions, etc. If the only way to our representative’s hearts is through their war chest, it’s about time we stopped funding the enemy. Capitalism can win as long as consumers make intelligent choices.
