Things I don’t like about my Mac
I like my Mac Pro. I don’t regret the purchase, I haven’t missed Windows at all, and I don’t see anything in Windows Vista that I’m going to be jealous of. But there are a few things that Apple needs to get better at. Maybe some of these will be addressed in Leopard, but I’ll keep this a “live document,” adding and removing annoyances as needed.
- “Preview” sucks for viewing photos. Unlike the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, IrfanViewer, etc., you can’t just hit an arrow key and go to the next photo in the same folder. Each photo must be opened separately, or you have to drag them into the “drawer” first before viewing them.
- No thumbnail view. Unlike Explorer, there is no Thumbnail view in Finder. I’m a photographer, so this makes finding photos a pain. I don’t want to go into iPhoto just to email a photo to someone.
- No Remote Desktop Server. There is a feature-poor version of VNC Server built in and a freeware alternative that’s a little better (OSXvnc), but VNC just doesn’t touch the speed, stability, and features of Remote Desktop.
- Finder kind of sucks. No trees, weird default views, can’t open a duplicate window, and other odd limitations.
- Doesn’t use Apache to its full potential. Apache web server is built in and works great (this blog is hosted on it), but Apple ought to have it pre-configured with some tools like blogging and photo sharing (integrated with iPhoto) so people other than geeks like me can run their own web server.
That’s it for now, I’ll think of some other gripes later. Merry Christmas to all…
