The Machine Is Us/ing Us?
The final video is out, and it’s pretty good.
But the author misses something important in every example of collaborative/social/web2.0 web sites: Yahoo, CNN, Blogger, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, etc.
The machine isn’t ours.
The singularity of human information we are creating with our writing, searching, tagging, and linking is hosted, censored, and managed by a small number of companies. The entire infrastructure of Web 2.0 is based on centralized command-and-control rather than decentralized hosting. If fear that we’ll figure out, far too late, that possession is 9/10ths of the law.
Web 3.0 should be about taking back control, collectively, and building tools that allow us to self-host our data and our communities in seamless, decentralized, provider-independent, mirrored ways.
